House. Probably C15 with C17 additions. Timber framed with painted
brick infill panels; plain tile roof; brick ridge stack. T-shaped plan.
Single-cell baffle-entry plan hall range of cruck construction aligned
north-south facing west with north-west porch of 1622 and a C17 two-
bay crosswing to the north aligned east-west. Hall range of one storey
and attic to the right with 3 tiers of square panels to eaves level,
and straight braces. Large C20 latticed casement to the right; central
C17 gabled attic dormer with ovolo-moulded tie beam and v-struts, containing
a C19 mullion and transom window. Gabled porch to the left dated 1622
with ovolo-moulded tie beam, and v-struts, and a nail-studded door.
C17 gabled crosswing to the left of 2 storeys and attic. High brick
and stone plinth and tiers of square panels to eaves level. Double
collar and tie beam roof trusses with vertical struts between the horizontal
members; C20 latticed casements. Exposed cruck truss to the south gable
with Alcock apex type F1. The north front of the crosswing has a different
framing pattern, consisting of 2 tiers of tall rectangular panels broken
up by 2 areas of square panels similar to those of the west front.
Interior. Inside the porch and directly in front of the chimney stack
is an ogee-headed doorway with simple fleur-de-lys carvings on the lintel.
The first floor within the cruck framed building is a later insertion;
it has a chamfered cross beam. A second pair of crucks is visible to
the north. C17 newel staircase within the crosswing with splat balusters
around the top of the stair well. Alcock p.155.
