Harbour pier, bollards, iron crane post and fairleads. Mid to late C18.
West pier commenced c.1750 with design for wooden pier, replaced in stone.
Thomas Preston, Harbour mason; Smeaton consultant 1774, Harbour Engineer
1788 to c.1791; later repairs. Outer walls of stepped granite and coping
with stone parapet. Stone flag paving, largely covered with C20 tarmac.
Fifty granite bollards. painted, along inner edge of pier. Granite slab
paving set in radial pattern at pier head. Low coping at pier head with
inset iron pulleys or fairleads, used to guide boats into harbour. Vertical
iron crane post, erected 1815, the jib etc now lost. (See Busson, Cap.3;
Matkin, Maritime Thanet).
