GRINDON C.P.
HILLSDALE
Oxclose Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Early C17 with later alterations and additions. Coursed and
squared rubble with ashlar dressings; clay tile roof; brick ridge stack
to right of centre and ashlar integral end stack of circular section.
The original plan was a single range building of 2 rooms; this was extended
towards the N.E. in the C18 or C19 and a kitchen wing was added to the
rear (N.W.) probably in the C19. 2 storeys, but differences in the
stonework indicate that it originally consisted of 1 storey and gable-
lit attic; asymmetrical fenestration, 4 windows on ground floor and 2
on first floor; early C17 4-light chamfered mullioned window to left of
centre flanked on each side by an early C17 single-light window; all 3
have rebated surrounds and straight hood moulds; a first-floor 3-light
chamfered mullioned window to left of centre is probably late C17; both
ground and first floors to right hand have a 2-light casement; C20 board
door to right of centre opening to right hand room. Colum Giles (1975).
