Description

SK 03 NW CHECKLEY C.P. HOLLINGTON ROAD (south side)

9/135 Balustrading, steps,
piers and gates to the
south of Orangery, 200m
N.E. of Heath House

GV II

Balustrading, steps, piers and gates. Circa 1830 by James Trubshaw.
Stone. The balustrading and low retaining wall flank a rectangular sunken
garden to the south of the Orangery (qv). The walls are divided into bays
by piers capped by urns; the balustrading is round arched top and (inversely)
bottom; steps are set at the south end and a pair facing each other to the
north end; a semicircle of wll leads to the entrance (axial with the south
steps and Orangery [qv]) with cast iron decorative piers, urns, poppyhead
rails and gates. The formal garden of box hedges completes the excellent
setting for the Orangery. The original drawing has been retained showing
the layout much as executed with the exception of the semicircular
entrance bay; a large triumphal arch was suggested which must have been
rejected.
