Inn, late C17, with extensions of early C18, C19 and C20. 2 storeys and attics.
From the east:- 3-window range to right of late C17, with a slightly-later 3-
window range to left. A carriage entrance passes between the two ranges.
Walling of narrow red bricks, later painted, with string at 1st floor. Parapet
gables with corbelled kneelers; that at the north end is of Flemish type, with
semi-circular head. Plaintiled roof with central and gabled chimneys of red
brick, one repaired in gault brick. Hipped plaintiled C18 dormers with deep
moulded eaves cornices and small-pane casements. Mullioned and transomed
wooden windows of C18, with flat arches of gauged brick. Central to the right-
hand range is an C18 doorway with large oblong fanlight having radial glazing
bars; C20 glazed panelled door. To the rear of the right-hand range is a good
C17 staircase through 3 floors with turned urn-shaped balusters and heavy
moulded strings; the square newels have ball cap-finials. A staircase in the
left-hand range of early C18 has fretted splat-balusters. In a 2-storey C20
south rear range is a fireplace with reset late C16 carved oak surround and
overmantel; the flanking carved figures are of unusual quality.
