Dewlands Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Rear range probably early C16 with extensive later alterations, front
range early C19. Timber-framed, rendered, plain tile roofs. Red and white brick
stacks. Rear range has cross wing to right, present front range may occupy site of
former second cross wing. 2 storeys. Front range 5-window facade with central
panelled double doors in pilastered doorcase with hood. Narrow 8-pane sashes to
2nd and 4th bays, otherwise 12-pane sashes in flush frames with sills. Overhanging
hipped roof with white brick stack to rear pitch. Rear wing, garden front: C20
conservatory attached to right. Lobby entry, off-centre C20 door. C20 casements
with leaded lights. Steeply-pitched swept roof hipped at front. Off-centre stack,
upper part rebuilt in white brick. Cross wing gabled at rear, catslide roof to
former hall section. Brick lean-to addition at right not of special interest.
Interior: rear range, stack probably inserted into former cross passage. Interior
remodelled C20, cross wing ceiling partly removed to form open stairhall. Large
red brick stack, rebuilt in part. Chamfered tie beam of cross wing has mortices
for missing arch braces. 1st floor room to left of stack has ovolo and hollow
chamfered beam and moulded joists with tongue stops. Roof remodelled to form hip,
but post above cross wing tie beam may be vestigial crown post. Front range has
early C19 detailing including fireplaces and staircase with carved tread ends and
wreathed handrail. Part in Holton St Mary parish.
