TM 04 SE WASHBROOK OFF WENHAM ROAD
1/40 Birch House Farmhouse
II
House. Early C17 with C18 and later alterations and additions. Timber-framed,
rendered, plain tile roofs. Brick plinth and underpinning. 2 and 2½ storeys.
4 cells, originally 3, extended C18 to east. North face: C20 small paned casements,
6 to ground floor, 4 to first floor, those to ground floor of single of 2-lights,
those to first floor of 2-lights. Rear (South). 6 assorted first floor casements,
mostly C20, some with diamond leaded panes, but one horizontal sliding sash.
Assorted C20 ground floor single, 2 and 3-light casements. Porch, door and window,
1960's. Returns have assorted C20 openings. External stack to south wall. Axial
stack set off ridge. A little cable pattern pargetting, part now internal.
Interior: Blocked doorway to hall. Remains of shutter slide to window. Stop
chamfered roughly cut transferse beams. C17 brickwork to stack which is somewhat
altered. Blocked front right-hand 4-light diamond mullion window, and another to
rear against stack; to first floor. First floor gable end shutter. Altered clasped
purlin roof.
