5/29 Reservoir outfall and sluices
to Wilton Reservoir

Outfall to Wilton reservoir, 1836 by John Blackwell, for the Kennet
and Avon Canal Co. Brick with stone corners and timber sluices.
Three sluices in row, restored, controlling outfall water at
various levels, with weir to 2 and channel to feeder cut. Two weir
sinks for overflow, with piped outfall beneath apron also to feeder
cut. Feeder has gauge weir and channel to pound below Lock 61
(q.v.). Syphon under towpath. The reservoir was constructed to
contain the springs of Wilton village as a reliable water source
for the canal. One of an important group of industrial and
utilitarian monuments of special interest.
