SO 52 NE KINGS CAPLE

1861/3/10003 Castle Cottage

House and outbuilding. Circa late C17; extended circa early C19. Timber-framed with plastered wattle infilling, extended in local sandstone rubble. Steeply pitched asbestos tile roof with gabled ends. Stone rubble gable-end stack with red brick shaft. PLAN: Small 1-room plan house with gable-end stack on right. Outbuilding added on left, the ground floor open at rear; the loft above extends the attic accommodation of the house. EXTERIOR: 1 storey and attic. Timber box-framing on right with large square plastered panels and later casement; outbuilding on left with blind stone rubble front wall. At rear, the outbuilding to right is open with re-used timber-framing above, under eaves; later outshut on left in front of timber-framing, and central raking dormer. Later outshut on gable end around stack. INTERIOR: House has chamfered floor beams with hollow-step or cyma stops and broad joists. Plank doors. Attic fireplace with simple chimneypiece and C19 iron grate.
