Pair of estate cottages, originally a service range of Shrubland Old Hall,
which was largely demolished in C19. Dated 1637 on building. 3 cells, 2
storeys. Timber-framed and plastered, largely underbuilt and encased in
C19/C20 brickwork now painted. Plaintiled roof with axial chimneys of red
brick; at the south gable are original barge boards with carved trailing-leaf
ornament; on one side are the initials B over WD, and on the other the date
1637; in the apex is a drop-finial. Mainly C20 small-pane casements and flush
entrance doors. Good clasped purlin roof, partly wind-braced. Some plain
close-studding exposed internally. A 2-storey C20 extension is attached to
the west side. At the north end is a C19 water-tower serving the Shrubland
estate; a plain square structure of gault brick, heavily buttressed and with
battlemented parapets.
