Farmhouse, mid or late C16 with alterations of early C17 and mid C19. 2
storeys. 3-cell cross-passage entrance plan. Timber-framed and plastered.
Hipped plaintiled roofs; external chimneys of red brick, with some C16 diaper
work in burnt headers at lower levels, the upper levels rebuilt C19. Mainly
mid C19 small-pane sashes, those at ground storey with sidelights. C19
entrance door at cross-passage position, with 6 panels (the upper 4 panels
glazed). The hall has a fully-exposed 1st floor structure above, with
multiple roll mouldings applied to beams and joists which are of exceptionally
deep and narrow cross-section for C16 carpentry. Good close-studding exposed
in several rooms. In a short rear wing is an original stair of ladder type
with triangular block treads; a moulded door frame at the base, and
balustrading with turned balusters and moulded handrails. A small part of the
plain crownpost roof survives over the parlour cell to right, which was
originally of cross-wing form. Remodelling of early or mid C17 includes: full
wainscotting in the parlour and chamber above with moulded open fireplaces;
several first floor rooms have C17 wall-plaster scratched to simulate ashlar
work; a rear chamber has a moulded plaster ceiling, and two others have
applied rose and fleur-de-lys motifs. An associated partially complete
medieval moat.
