Large house, former Rectory. c.1820-30 for Rev. W.C. Steggall. White brick.
Shallow hipped slate roof. 3 x 2 bay 2 storey main block. Central entrance,
steps up to architraved large late C19 double doors, margin glazed with leaded
panes. Timber Roman Doric portico, correctly detailed. Recessed 12 pane
glazing bar sashes with stone sills, gauged brick flat arched heads, taller on
first floor. Returns have 2 bays of similar sashes, that on first floor to
front left is C20 replacing a dummy. To rear scattered sashes with cambered
heads. Offset plinth, boxed eaves. 2 white brick stacks on return slopes,
roof has twin hips to rear with central valley. Interior: original swept
dogleg staircase with turned newels, slat balusters, ramped, moulded and
wreathed handrail, cheekpieces, dado; service stair also has a ramped
handrail. Some original simple cornices, architraved doors. Attached to rear
left a slightly lower 2 bay 2 storey service wing with cross entry towards
main block, outer face has a 6 panelled door below a 3:6 pane sash, a 2 storey
scullery outshut with a small 3-light casement with a cambered head and a
hipped roof to front. To rear right a low range of lean-to sheds behind a
garden wall which links to coach house/stable block at right angles to enclose
third side of service yard; clay lump and timber frame with a hipped slate
roof, 5 bays, 2 storeys, rendered front with central double doors, flanking
architraved entrances and outer lunette windows, red brick returns.
