The Old Rectory
II
Former rectory. One cross-wing of an open-hall house of c.1500; major remodelling following removal of hall range in early C19. Timber-framed and plastered with early C19 herringbone pargetting in large panels. Plaintiled roofs with axial and external chimneys of red brick. 2 storeys. Early C19 small-pane casements with transomes; some have intersecting glazing bars in the upper panes in the Gothic manner, some have border panes; some original external louvred shutters. Early C19 panelled entrance door, the upper half glazed; moulded architrave and cornice. A slated C19/C20 lean-to verandah. The C16 core is probably a service wing of a substantial house; 3 bays of heavy framing including some close-studding and unchamfered joists, but otherwise mainly concealed. Plain crownpost roof, posts with 4-centred plank braces. A hipped wing to right has a probably C17/C18 core but almost rebuilt early C19, with further mid C19 remodelling. A C19 bakehouse (linked to the main house) stands on the site of the hall range; flint rubble walling, but reusing mainly medieval timber components.
