GV II
House, late C14 with C17 alterations. Hall range of one storey and attics, 2-
storey cross-wing to left. Timber-framed and plastered, some C18 herringbone
pargetting. The cross-wing is end-jettied towards the road but has mainly
been underbuilt in painted brick - the short jettied section has one broad
knee exposed. Thatched roofs; an axial chimney, the shaft rebuilt in C20 red
brick. Another internal C19 chimney at front of left-hand gable. C20 small-
pane sashes. Framed and boarded C20 entrance door. The house has some
unusual features occasionally seen in urban houses at this date. A dais
recess at the left hand end of the open hall is formed within the lower storey
of the cross-wing, whose 1st floor joists oversail to support a moulded
bressumer over the dais. The external jetty is supported by short sections of
joist at the front of the 1st floor area. Studwork with prolific tension
bracing. The open truss of the hall is depleted; the arch braces are thick,
steep and unchamfered, and the tie beam is removed. The cross-wing of 2 bays
has a cambered tie beam at the open truss. A large C16 open lintelled
fireplace backs onto the former cross-entry, but the right-hand end of the
hall range was remodelled in C17. Late C16 or early C17 inserted upper floor
and clasped purlin roof.
