RATTLESDEN HIGH TOWN GREEN, HOLLY

BUSH LANE
3/98 Hollybush Farmhouse
-
- II
Former farmhouse, early C17. 2 storeys and attics. Complex plan: a hall
range to right, crosswing at centre, and a one-storey-with-attics service
range added in C18 to left. Timber-framed and plastered with C20 herringbone
pargetting in panels. The cross-wing has an oversailing tie beam at the
gable, and the studding above is exposed. Plaintiled roofs. To right is an
internal end chimney of C17/C18 red brick, and a large C18 axial chimney in
the service range with adjacent C19 casement dormer. Mainly C20 mullioned
windows, some with leaded glazing; some are C17 windows restored. Entrance at
rear. Rather plain C17 framing with primary-braced studding and on-edge floor
joists. Butt purlin roof. In the cross-wing is a wide lintelled open
fireplace. The layout of the C17 house is unusual and may result from early
alteration or enlargement.
