II
Originally one house, now 2. Late Cl5/ early C16. Timber framed, mainly
plastered; textured plasterwork to the facade. Right gable end cased in
colourwashed brick. Thatched roof. 2 storeys and attic. 4 windows, C18
casements, the upper windows with elliptically-headed arches above them.
No.53 has a C19 half-glazed door with bracketed flat hood. Doorway to No.54
has reeded architrave and small bracketed hood; C19 plank door with studded
battens in C16 style. Both doorways are approached by a flight of 3 steps.
Internal stack; small external stack to left gable end. This may well have
been an open hall house, although the roof timbers show no sign of smoke-
blackening. The stack is a later insertion against the upper end of the hall.
Ceiling of hall has closely-spaced plain joists; at the lower end is a cross-
beam with moulded and embattled ornament. Heavier plain joists at solar end
(within No.53). Some exposed studding with reverse-curved braces. Queen-post
roof over hall, all the braces missing. The roof was originally hipped.
