5/161 Walled garden, l00m north
- of Tostock Place
-- II
Walled garden, early or mid C19. Built to serve Tostock Place. Red brick in
stretcher bond, entirely of half-brick thickness. All four sides are of
serpentine plan, known as crinkle-crankle walling. Rectangular form, about 40
x 25m. Walling about 2m high. At east ends of north and south walls are
pedestrian gateways: the latter retains a simple wrought iron gate. Crinkle-
crankle walling gives stability to half-brick walling, to a greater height
than would otherwise be possible; and gives added shelter for plants trained
against it. Only a small number were built in late C18 and early C19, and
mainly in Suffolk. In poor condition and partially collapsed at date of
survey. Tostock Place is not a listed building.
