BRAISEWORTH
BRAISEWORTH LANE
The Cottage

II

House. C16 origins with C17 remodelling. Timber framed and plastered;
pantiled roof. 1½ storeys. 2-cell, lobby entry form. 2 windows., mid C20
tripartite casements. 2 gabled 2-light dormers, one flush rooflight between.
Central gabled porch of 1976 with plank door in side wall. Stack has mid C20
shaft. One-storey flat-roofed additions of 1976 to right gable end and rear.
Interior. 3-bay frame with narrower centre bay for stack: there appears to be
a break in the wallplates at each of the bay divisions. Good heavy full-
height studding and reverse-curved braces in both cells; evidence for re-use
of some timbers. Right cell has 2 diamond-mullioned windows, possibly
secondary, just above upper floor level, and evidence for a blocked doorway in
the rear wall near the gable end. Plain ceiling joists in ground floor rooms;
the joists in the room to right are pegged to the floorbeam, those in the
opposite room are not. Left room has intact open fireplace with original
lintol. Side purlin roof over left cell, probably C17; roof over right cell
not examined.
