- Paxes House
-- II
Former farmhouse, the left room latterly used as a shop. First half of C16:
the left cell is the earlier but is much altered, the remainder was remodelled
in early C17 when the stack was inserted. Renovated 1980's. Timber framed
and rendered, thatched roof. 3 cells. 2 storeys. 3 windows, small-paned 3-
light casements, the upper windows old, those on the ground floor replaced
1980's. Lobby entry: gabled porch with battened plank door. Stack has plain
axial shaft of narrow brick. Interior. Main phase comprised hall and service
end: partly exposed heavy studding with arched corner braces. Blocked cross-
entry doorways, that at the front formerly with an arched head. Hall bridging
beam has large chamfer without stops; the joists are concealed. Evidence for
possible smoke hood at upper end of hall: smoke-blackened timbers, additional
tie beam, now removed. Stack inserted into lower bay of hall; at same time
the service end was given a new ceiling of regular plain joists set flat and
turned into a parlour. Open fireplaces on ground floor, one under repair at
time of survey. C19 newel stair. Left cell has much replacement studding;
evidence for diamond-mullioned gable end window on ground floor. Plain
ceiling joists with trimming for ladder stair. Roof over hall of irregular
scantling.
