WETHERINGSETT-CUM-BROCKFORD BROCKFORD, NORWICH ROAD
TM 16 NW
3/107 Nos. 1 & 2 Turnpike
- Cottages
-- II
Former farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. Long C16 main range, in 2 phases, with C17
2-cell cross-wing to rear (east). Timber framed and plastered, thatched roof.
2 storeys, attic in cross-wing. Various casement windows, mostly of C20; some
older casements to south. 2 semi-glazed 4-panel doors to south. Internal
stacks in each range, the shafts all rebuilt. Interior. Main range has
substantial framing exposed on upper floor. The section east of the stack,
probably earlier, has tension bracing and evidence for original windows with
heavy diamond mullions. To west of stack, 3 bays with reverse-curved braces;
an intact diamond-mullioned window in north wall. Roof not examined. South
cell of cross-wing has early-mid C17 ceiling: ovolo-moulded beam with nicked
stop- chamfers, chamfered joists. Plain first floor studding, no visible
bracing. Clasped purlin roof with 2-way arched wind bracing. Stack appears
to be inserted into north bay. Newel attic stair. During renovations, an
inscription in Latin was uncovered above one of the upper fireplaces in the
cross-wing; this is now concealed.
