3/58 Willow Tree Farmhouse
II
Former farmhouse, divided at one time into 2. Early C16. Timber-framed and
rendered with thatched roof. One storey and attics; 3-cell form; an early C19
single-storey lean-to addition with slate roof at each end. An internal
chimney-stack with a plain shaft of old red brick, built in 2 stages; a later
external stack on the left. Random fenestration; various 2-light C20 leaded
casement windows, one old 6-pane fixed window, and one 3-light casement window
with a single horizontal bar to lights. Plank door on extreme right, and
another in the left lean-to. Interior with timbers exposed: the house appears
to have been initially single-storey throughout. Remains of diamond mullioned
windows on the upper floor originally extended below the present floor-level,
and tie-beams to each side of the internal stack have been cut for access
upstairs. Plain ceiling timbers, chamfered main beams; evidence for original
doorways, including one with arched head to the room at the left end. Also in
this room, one post-head retains a carved shield similar to those at Home
Farmhouse, West Street, (Item 2/82). To right of stack, the timber lintel has
a double roll moulding and run-off stops, to the left, where the fireplace is
open, the Tudor brickwork is still partly tuck-pointed. Roof with clasped
side purlins, small principals, windbraces.
