House, formerly divided into 2 cottages. Part late C16, part later C17. 1½
storeys; 2-cell form, with extensions on the north. Timber-framed and
plastered with clay pantiles; frame in 4 bays with a 5th bay added. An
internal chimney-stack with a plain rebuilt red brick shaft. All the windows
on the front are plain late C20 casements. A C20 enclosed porch with a
shallow-pitched roof; a sunporch added on its south side. There is great
variation in the framing inside and a considerable amount of C20 repair and
replacement. The 2 bays to the south of the stack are the earliest: on the
ground floor, an exposed timber ceiling with wide, flat, unchamfered joists
and a main beam with curved, slightly stepped stops (cf. 1 & 2 School Cottage,
Item 3/48). A large plain fireplace lintel. On the upper floor, the former
open truss with a later studded partition wall has a cambered tie-beam
supported by arched braces. The roof is inaccessible, but the tie-beam has
peg-holes for queen-posts. One upper fireplace with plain lintel. Newel
stair by the stack. To the north of the stack, the ceiling timbers have been
replaced and the framing is of later date.
