10/179 The Old Rectory

Rectory, now house. C17, mainly mid C18. Squared and ashlar lias with C20
concrete tile roof. L-shaped plan. 2 storeys with attic. Garden front: 4-window
range of sashes with glazing bars, 2 to left have flat arch heads and 2 to right
have moulded stone architraves with keystones. Double sashes to left at ground
floor. C19 canted stone bay to far right. C20 glazed door to right has moulded
stone surround with keystone and pediment above. The right section of this
facade is ashlar with rusticated quoins. There is an ashlar string course
throughout. Hipped and gabled roof with ashlar moulded cornice and gable
parapets and kneelers. Brick and stone stacks at ridge and end. Two C20 dormers.
Facade to right: ashlar with 3 first-floor sashes having moulded stone
architraves and keystones, large central canted bay on this facade probably C19.
Interior: Dining room and kitchen to left of entrance have moulded ceiling beam
with interlacing decoration. Open fireplace with bressumer in dining room has
remains of spit mechanism. This part of the house may be late C17/C18. Staircase
with quarter landings has large early C19 window with stained glass. Several
first floor rooms retain early Cl9 fireplaces with cast iron baskets.
