14.7.55 (Formerly listed as No.2 and cottage
- II adJoining No.2)
House, formerly divided into 3, now 2. Early C16, with a later C17 wing added
on the east, and an extension of c.1900 on the south. Part 2 storeys, part
1½ storeys. Timber-framed, plastered and lined, with thatched roofs to
older part, red brick and double Roman tiles to 1900 extension. Main range,
aligned north-south, has an internal chimney-stack with 3 attached hexagonal
shafts: 3-cell plan, lobby entrance. Small-paned casement windows. Framing
exposed inside, but roof inaccessible. Principal ground-floor room of 1½
bays suggests possibility of an older core to house. Main cross-beams are
carved with an unusual cresting decoration, and an applied cornice of similar
design runs around the room. One small section of cornice has a slightly
formalised design of vine leaves and grapes. 2 open fireplaces with timber
lintels. The small east-west crosswing has been extensively restored. Light
framing, mid C20 casement windows and doors. Extension on south has an end
chimney-stack, single-storey rectangular bay window with tripartite slate roof,
3 sash windows with single vertical bar to upper storey, and a 4-panel door
with plain rectangular fanlight.
