4/31 Nos. 1 & 2
Garden House &
14.7.55 adjoining garden
wall and gates.
(Formerly
listed as
Gardeners House)
GV II
House, now divided into 2. Early C17. Flint, with an admixture
of red brick headers; red brick quoins and dressings. Hipped,
plaintiled roof with wide eaves overhang. 2 storeys and attics.
2 internal chimney-stacks with plain red brick shafts. The
original range of 8 small-paned sash windows to each storey has
been reduced to 5 on each storey, with 2 blank panels to the
ground storey and 3 above infilled with flint and a diamond of
red brick headers. A garden door replaces one window. 3 flat-
headed dormers with 2-light diamond-leaded casement windows.
Little framing visible inside: 2 main ceiling beams with chamfer
and scroll-stops. The wide internal splay of one blocked rear
window indicates that the house always had flint and brick
walling. Roof with heavy principal rafters and butt purlins.
Later extensions at the rear. The house probably originally
faced northwards, with a lobby entrance: the area to the north of
the internal stack in No.1 has been given arches to the stair and
the doorways on each side of it in late C17 Classical style, with
rounded half columns, moulded capitals, and plain abacus,
Extending southwards from the east end of the house is a long
stretch of high C18 red brick garden wall, with decorative
copings. The lower courses are in English Bond. Attached to
this is a pair of high ornamental wrought-iron double gates, with
plain red brick piers surmounted by stone urns.
