Place Farmhouse

Two barns, aligned north-south and placed end to end to the west of Place
Farmhouse. Late C18. Red brick and timber-framing; corrugated asbestos
roofing. The northern barn has thick brick walls laid in English bond with
traces of diaper patterns in blue headers. Roof contains reused timbers: in 12
short bays, with a ridge piece, and principal rafters set on edge. Two rows of
stepped butt purlins. The trusses have alternately a tie-beam or a double
collar, an unusual arrangement. Small gablets at the north and south ends of
the roof have been infilled. Diamond-shaped ventilation openings in the walls
also mainly infilled. The southern barn is timber-framed with some remains of
original weatherboarding, but some of the walling has been removed and replaced
by corrugated iron. Frame in 5 bays: straight tie-beams, long arched braces,
main posts with long jowls. No middle rail: primary braces and bisected studs.
Roof in 10 bays, 2 bays corresponding to one wall bay: 2 rows of stepped butt
purlins and a ridge-piece.
