1/17 The Old Rectory
II
House, formerly the rectory. C18 and early C19. 2 storeys, irregular form,
set sideways on to the road. Part brick, part timber-framed and rendered,
with slate roofs. Main range fronted in white brick, with overhanging eaves
and paired mutule cornice. Ground storey with 2 outer small-paned sash
windows with gauged heads and a large central mid C19 projecting single-storey
bay window with a recessed 8-panel door beside it: the 4 top panels glazed,
set in a rectangular reeded surround. Over the bay window and door, an ornate
wrought-iron open veranda with a sloping slate roof. 4 small-paned sash
windows in cased frames to upper storey. Irregular fenestration to the long
side range. At the rear, an C18 door with raised fielded panels and a large
semi-circular-headed window above. The house is complex and the exterior
shows signs of considerable alteration. An entry in the diary of Thomas King
of Thelnetham reads: 'Hepworth Parsonage slated 1820'.
