House. C15 with C17, C18, C19 and C20 additions and alterations. Timber
framed, red brick, plain tiled roof, originally thatched. Remains of open
hall, now divided into 2-storeys with later 2 storey wing. The eastern end
of the hall has been curtailed. Entrance front: C18 Flemish bond walling.
to the centre of the ground floor is a C20 lean-to half-glazed outshut
masking 2 doorways, that at right a C19 stable door with cambered head and
a plank door at left, also with cambered head possibly in line with the
former screens passage. To left is a 2-light C20 casement window with
cambered head to either side of which is rendered walling. To far right is
a similar 2-light window and to the first floor two 2-light windows at
right and left and the single-light casement at centre. Massive wall plate
to the top of the wall. Right-hand gable end has a C20 single-storey
service addition at ground floor left with flat roof and a gable chimney
stack with 2 flues above. The left hand gable end has a massive chimney
stack at right of centre of brick with offsets. The rear is rendered and
colourwashed and has a C19 casement window and to the first floor at left
and right 2-light casement windows and a single light to the centre.
Interior: chamfered C17 beams to the ground floor rooms and one C18 four-
panel door with strap hinges. The stairwell has timber framed walls and
uneven, steep steps, probably of C17 date. The central hall truss, now
divided between 2 bedrooms has a cambered tie beam with double chamfer and
bird beak decoration to its underside and a crown post, the lower end of
which is partially embedded in a dividing wall and the upper portion of
which is in a loft above an inserted ceiling. This is octagonal and has a
moulded (partially mutilated) base and a brattished and moulded cap. Four
arched braces spring from this to the collar and collar purlin. Close
studding dividing wall to west of this with wattle and daub infill and
having a further arched brace supporting the collar purlin. the eastern
end of the hall has been partially demolished. Heavy common rafters
throughout the roof joined by collars. One, planted, later arched brace
to the central truss.
