Almshouse group. Circa 1912 by Ernest Newton . Red brick with red brick quoins
and dressings, moulded wooden eaves cornice to hipped plain tiled roof with end
stacks. 2 Storeys. 5 bays, the central three divided by rusticated brick pilasters
Casement windows on both floors in outer bays. Balconies on first floor in central
3 bays, the outer pair blocked at time of resurvey. 3 arched entrances below, the
centre one leading to two flights of stairs with iron balustades.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing
leading architects of the day.
