Statue. 1914 by George Frampton, for William Whiteley. Copper and stone, c25
feet high. Stone benches to base, plinth below with square pier decorated with
bay leaf garland. Copper plaque with profile bust of William Whiteley on the
north side. Crowning seated female figure of Industry with beehive and caduseus
emblems in copper.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
