Westernmost barn at Glen Farm
II
Barn. Circa 1700 or later. Timber and brick, with a roof of corrugated iron,
gableted at the south end, so that there are three bays (of unequal length)
under the main roof while a fourth is under the slope at the south end. East
front: horizontal boarding covers the two northernmost bays apart from brick-
work in the lower part of the first bay; a lean-to addition of brick with
corrugated iron roof abuts against the whole side of the third and fourth bays.
North, west and south fronts are covered with horizontal boarding except for a
stretch of brickwork filling the lower part of the second bay on the west
front. Interior: Tiled floor to the northernmost bay. An upper floor has been
inserted which stops short halfway across the fourth bay. North wall consists
of jowled main posts and a truss which now consists of tie-beam, collar and
principals. The next two trusses rest on jowled main posts and arched braces,
and consist of tie-beam, principals and angle-struts. The fourth truss is of
the Queen post type. About three metres north of the barn are the remains of a
horse engine whose shaft runs into the barn, connecting with surviving machinery;
the west side of the second bay is occupied by a brick chamber whose floor
is almost four feet below the level of the rest of the barn.
