6/303 The Old Rectory
II
Detached house, former rectory, 1903, designed by C M Oldrid Scott. Brownish
brick with red sound faced brick dressings, clay-tiled roof. Tile hanging
to upper floor of service wing, stone caps to chimneys. The principal part
of the house is set out as a rectangular block under a hipped roof. The
entrance front faces east: all but symmetrical elevation, handsome bracketed
canopy to porch with lead roof, sashes to principal ground floor windows,
the rest casements, shaped gable to centre with Diocletian window, two dormers
in the roof. The garden front is to the W: made less obviously symmetrical
by off-centre chimney-stack; shallow single-storey bays to either side, sashes
to all principal rooms; the central bay carried up through the eaves and capped
with a curved lead roof expressed as a broken pediment. On the S side, single
storey wing, former parish room, and greenhouse, both part of the original
design, handsome expressed chimney stack. On the n side, the service wing
under a separate lower roof, brick to the ground floor, tile-hanging above.
Alterations and additions to the exterior are: extension of the parish room
to the e, and, in the service wing, garden door and window at W end, door
blocked in centre of N side, lean-to to east side, entire ground floor of
S side. Interior: the plan survives in part on the ground floor, and in large
part on the upper floor. No features of particular interest.
