TQ 04 NW SHALFORD CHINTHURST LANE
4/0 Barn at Chinthurst Farm
GV II
Former stable and cartshed, previously barn, C17 3 bay barn, rebuilt on a higher
cill and converted to stable for four draught horses in late C18 or early C19 with
insertion of floor for hay-loft and with 2 bay single storey cart shed added to
west about the same time. Timber framed, clad in weather-boarding with half hipped
tiled roof and deep plinth of stone rubble with some brick dressings, steepest on
south side, north side has slim cart entrance to cart shed, stable door to former
stable and 2 later inserted windows. East side has loading door to hay-loft with
iron pintle hinges. South side has low dung door into farmyard. Barn has wide
curved queen struts through purlins, corner jowled posts and curved tension bracing.
The inserted upper floor rests on triangular spine beams with joists resting over.
There is a wide gap at each end for feeding the hay down directly into the hay
racks. C19 boarded partitions separate the stalls and the mangers survive with
rings for tethering the horses and hay racks over. Interesting survival of harness
trees and bridle pegs made of bent twigs; cobbled floor to centre. Cart shed has
queen post roof and some diagonal tension bracing to wall plate.
