Erected by Sir Edward Banks between 1803 and 1805 as the weigh and toll-house
of the Croydon, Merstham and Godstone Iron Railway (1805-59) which was an extension
of the Surrey Iron Railway (1801-1846) said to be the first public railway in
the world. The railway comprised trucks pulled by a single horse and brought
Merstham stone to Croydon and Wandsworth. The house is built of coursed square
blocks of Merstham (chalk) stone. 2 storeys, 2 windows. Tiled roof. Modern
leaded casements and a central 4-Panel door. On left return a later canted bay
with hipped roof. Modern rear additions. Surrey County Council Historic Building
plaque.
