Nos.1 and 3
(Howard Cottage and Ivy Cottage)
II
Formerly known as Ashtead Cottage. Pair of cottages. Probably earlier C17
mostly remodelled c.1800; extended and enlarged. White painted brick, red tiled
roof. Single-depth 2-unit plan (each formerly one-up one-down) with one unit
added at left end of No.1, and rear extensions to both. Two low storeys;
formerly the entrance to each was in the gable wall, but the doorway to No.1 is
now in the front wall of the added bay; otherwise, the front wall of each has
one 2-centred arched casement window with Y-tracery in the head on each floor,
No.1 has a small arched stairlight window above the door, and No.3 has a
window at 1st floor of the gable wall like those at the front. Steeply-pitched
roof with ridge chimney at the junction, gable chimney at left end. Interior: 1st
floor of No.1 has an exposed wall-plate to the rear wall, a large roughly-hewn
tie-beam, and 2 windbraces. History: Lawrence's map of Ashtead in 1638 shows a
house on this site; in C19 was occupied by domestic staff of Howard House
which formerly stood next to it on the west. Reference: Proc.LDLHS VoL5, No.1,
1987.
