4.12.80 Library at St John's School

GV II

School chapel, now library. Dated 1876 at west end; altered internally. Flint with
sandstone dressings, red tile roof. Nave with apsidal chancel, south porch and
south vestry. Gothic style. The 5-bay nave has a plinth, buttresses and 2-centred
arched openings with hoodmoulds; on the south side the 1st bay has a gabled
porch with outer doorway moulded in 2 orders, the 5th bay has a gabled vestry
with stone pinnacles flanking the gable, which contains a geometrical rose
window, and the other bays have 2-light windows with plate tracery; the north
side has a doorway to the 1st bay and similar windows in the other bays. The
west gable wall has a large 4-light west window with bar tracery, a small
quatrefoil near the apex, and a stone plaque mounted over the centre of the
plinth, inscribed:
IN NO MINE DOMINI
HVNC LAPIDEM POSVIT
EDVARDVS HAROLDVS
EPISCOP WINTON
MDCCCLXXVI
At the east end, the chancel has three similar 2-light windows but with central
shafts which have stiff-leaf capitals. Interior: wallshafts to a roof structure
which is now concealed by an inserted ceiling; otherwise, not of special interest.
