FRANT BELLS YEW GREEN
TQ 63 NW 8/367 Stables about 30 metres
east of Manor Farmhouse

Stables with loft above. Probably early C18. Red brick with some flared blue
headers in Flemish bond with brick plinth and brick plat band at first floor
level at front and ends. The end gables are weatherboarded. Plain clay tile
roof with half-hipped ends. Plan: Rectangular on plan with ground floor doorway at
the centre of the front, and at south end and loft doorways at both ends. Exterior:
2 storeys. East front has central doorway with rebuilt brick segmental arch and
C20 plank door. Small window opening to left and right on front with flat brick
arches and C20 casements. At the rear (west) a small loft hatch under the eaves
to right of centre with an old boarded door with cover-moulds and wrought iron
hinges. At the left hand (south) end a stable doorway on the ground floor to
right of centre with a loft doorway above with a flight of C20 wooden external
stairs; both doorways have C20 plank doors. The right hand (north) end has a
ground floor window to left with a C20 frame and a loft doorway in the centre
of the gable with a plank door. Interior: The floor is supported on 3 chamfered
cross-beams with run-out stops. There is a section of an old wooden manger on
the back wall and hatches above in the floor. The stalls are missing. The first
floor was not inspected but photographs depict C19 crown-posts which might have
been inserted into an earlier structure to strengthen it.
