Description

SHOREHAH-BY-SEA OLD SHOREHAM ROAD
TQ 20 NW
3/21
12.10.54 Old Shoreham Bridge

11*

Road bridge, formerly toll, now restricted to pedestrians. 1781, restored in C20.
Timber baulks, some reinforced, with diagonal struts carry shallow arched bridge with
balustrade of 3 horizontal bars on wooden uprights. 500 feet long with 27 spans.
Twelve feet wide with 2 recesses, 24 feet wide, for passing vehicles. Causeways of
faggots sunk in marshland to west connecting the bridge with dry-land. Despite being
largely rebuilt in the early C20 this bridge is of great interest as being probably
the last example on a large scale of a form of bridge which was extremely common in
the C18 and C19. The western half of this bridge is in Lancing CP and is also listed
in that Parish.
