Built in 1825-6 by John Smith MP of Dale Park, Madehurst, Nr Arundel, for the
Quaker William Allen of "Allen and Hanburys" who, with John Smith and the
Earl of Chichester, founded the Allotment Colony in Lindfield called "America"
for the benefit of the poor of Lindfield. William Allen died in the house in
1843. Two storeys. Six windows. Stuccoed. Slate roof. Two parallel ranges.
The front range has a centre portion of 4 windows and slightly recessed wings of
one window each, the south one on ground floor only. Stringcourse. Glazing bars
intact. Ground floor has round-headed windows with Gothic gluing set in arcading.
Porch with square Doric columns and projecting cornice. Above the roof of the
back range is a small cupola containing a bell.
