Terraced houses. Early to mid-C19. Brick covered with stucco,
most roofs obscured by parapet, others of Welsh and artificial
slate. Generally three storeys over basement, one window each.
The houses form a symmetrical group, with three houses at each
end having fronts parallel to Essex Road, the rest forming a
shallow crescent with the middle three, nos 266-70, set
forward as a centrepiece. Ground floor has banded rustication.
All ground-floor openings round-arched and set within a
recessed round-arched panel of plain stucco; steps up to
entrance with simple doorcase, fanlight, some with decorative
glazing, and panelled doors; except no. 246, which has side
entrance in Rotherfield Street and now has a simple
round-arched entrance, simple doorcase, fanlight and panelled
door, and no. 290 which has a round-arched entrance with
fanlight in a single-storey porch. Ground-floor windows have
2/8 sashes for the most part. Storey band between ground and
first floors, upper storeys scored as ashlar. First- and
second-floor windows flat-arched and set in recessed
segmental-arched panels of plain stucco; shallow balconies to
first-floor windows, mostly replacement; moulded sill band,
cornice and blocking course. Dormers in mansard roof to nos
252-8 and 286-90. Railings to areas and flanking entrance
steps with spearhead, urn, and ball-and-disc finials to nos
246-64, 280-90, the rest replaced in whole or part.
