House. Dated 1669 RSK on quoin at left. Sandstone rubble with large
irregular quoins; low-pitched roof of Welsh slate with flat gable coping.
2 storeys, 3 bays. Central door in deeply-chamfered projecting stone
surround with flattened Tudor arch and low pointed top. All windows, sashes
with glazing bars, have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills;
narrower window above door. 2 end brick chimneys. Interior: fat turned
balusters and wide flat handrail to closed-string stair; shutters to some
windows. Main room has moulded 3-centred arch to large stone chimney-piece,
with scroll-stopped chamfers, inscribed 16 RSK82. Historical note:
Robert Surtees, great grandfather of the historian of Durham, occupied this
house in the C17. (W. Bourn, Ryton Parish, Carlisle 1896).
