(formerly listed as
Mill House)
G.V. II
Water Mill and house. Early C19, possibly incorporating an earlier mill. Coursed
squared sandstone; no roof. 2 storeys, 2 bays with one-storey wall in front formerly
enclosing mill race and wheel. Stone lintel to square shaft hole; renewed wood
lintels to square opening above and one on each floor at right. Left return has
round stone-arched doorway. Fragments of machinery inside. Historical note: there
was a mill here by 1739 which was known as 'Mabel's Mill'; from c.1848 the mill was
known as Heaton Mill. During the middle to late C19 it was a flint mill. Lord
Armstrong bought it in 1862.
