GV II*

House. C15/C16 with C17, C19 and C20 additions and alterations. Hall block
Timber framed: close studding with diagonal braces and C20 brick nogging,
ground floor of lias rubble. Entrance front: left wing C17 with wid-C19 wing
beyond, centre possibly C17, right wing mid C19. Regular coursed lias and lime-
stone dressings, with wider courses and plinth to C17 wing. Tile roofs through-
out, with some old tile, and stone stacks with brick shafts. Originally a hall
house, possibly with a wing, extended to irregular U-plan. 2 storeys and attic,
4-window range. Entrance recessed in centre has C20 glazed door and panels.
Leaded light casements, 2-light to left, 3-light above entrance, with transoms
to 1st floor. Projecting wings have 4-light chamfered stone mullioned windows
Kith hood moulds, mostly C19. Left wing has king mullions and a blocked 2-light
attic mullion. Projecting stack in centre. Timber framed gable visible
above roof. Hall block of 2 high storeys and attic. Garden front has C19
casements with glazing bars, 3 to ground floor and 2 larger windows on 1st
floor. To rear a massive external stack. End wall has early C19 scored
stucco to 1st floor and gable. Two 2-light leaded casements with hood
moulds to 1st floor,one to attic. Moulded wall plate bracket. Interior:
entrance hall has screen of framing with cusped braces and diagonal braces
above, with infill removed, possibly part of C16 hall before it was sub-
divided. C16 plank and batten door to kitchen has old lock and remains of
lozenge pattern. Kitchen has broad chamfered ceiling beam and part of a C17
panel door. Dining room, subdivided from original hall, has high ceiling
with heavy chamfered beams forming panels. Restored open fireplace. Room
off with C17 eight-panelled door. Straight flight staircase with exposed
framing at top. Bedroom with 4-centred arched fireplace and early C17
panelling. Another bedroom has stop-chamfered ceiling beams arranged cross-
wise. Lower part of a moulded arch brace visible in another room. In attic
broad old floor boards, and a purlin carved with a fish or dragon.
