House, 1690, probably for Jonathan Hill, merchant, of Salisbury,
altered C18 and extended in C19. Flint with brick lacings, plat
bands and dressings. Tiled roof. Double pile plan the front
raised to 3 storeys in later C18, with C19 service wing to rear
raised to 2 storeys c1970. Elevation of 7 bays, central three-
quarter glazed door within eared stone moulded architrave,
pulvinated frieze and thin canopy. Two plat bands. Twelve-pane
sashes, one original with heavy glazing bars to left of door others
later C18, all with gauged lintels. Stone cornice with simple
paired brackets and low stone parapet. Rear elevation has some
original 12-paned sashes and heavy dentilled timber eaves. Five
dormers to hipped roof and gable stacks. Rear wing C19 kitchen
over cellar, 4 bays, raised to 2 storeys to match, c1970. Rear
and end elevations have moulded bricks with scroll motif over.
Interior: most fittings and panelling of C17 house survive. Box
cornices to front rooms and marble fireplaces, including one Louis
XV chimney piece. Closed pulvinated string stair with newels with
sunk panels and timber balusters. Rear parlour has elaborate
cornice with scallops, husks and acanthus designs and unusual bed
alcove. Kitchen has flagged floor.
