This was the master's house of the former Chorister's School No 56c qv and
the residence of Canon Alexander de Hemingsby. Originally Nos 56c and 57 were
one building. C15/Cl4 refronted early C18. 2 storeys and attic. Brick with
stone quoins and first floor string. Moulded and coved cornice. Old tile
roof. 2 hipped dormers with lead casements. 5 windows with architrave frames
on first floor. 4 similar windows on ground floor and 6-Panel central door
with pediment hood on large carved scroll brackets with acanthus leaf ornament.
Tho earlier structure survives to rear. 2 storeys flint and stone rubble,
some tile herringbone. Later additions and restorations. 2 large tile hung
gables. Pointed arched stone framed window. 2 external chimney stacks of
flint rubble. C18 staircase and 2 front rooms one with panelling the other
with Rococo stucco work in alcove arch. Remains of timber framework to earlier
part.

All the listed buildings in the Close form an outstanding group.
