Later C18 recasing of C16 or earlier structure. 2 storey and attic. Brick
with bracketed stone eaves cornice carried over central pediment on slight
projection, 3 bays wide. Old tile roof with 2 hipped dormers. Circular light
in tympanum of pediment. 5 windows on lst floor. 4 windows on ground floor
and 6-panel central door with segmental fanlight in architrave surround and
under segmental moulded hood. Additional bay to right hand (no cornice)
with 1 circular window lst floor and panelled passage door below. Rear elevation
3 storeys red brick, bands between storeys, panelled parapet. 4 windows,
recessed sashes, camber headed on 2nd floor with sliding thick glazing bar
sashes, tall on lst and ground floors with flush keystones, the centre ground
floor window has panelled base. Some medieval stonework to west end of ground
floor.
Interior has good staircase rising through 3 storeys with open string, cut
brackets to tread ends, turned balusters, moulded handrail swept up to newels.
Good fielded panelling to eastern rear rooms on all floors with corner fireplaces
flanked by pilasters, fluted in ground floor room, eared architrave to panelled
overmantel and bolection cornice over. Moulded dentil cornice around rooms.
On 2nd floor behind pediment, traces of earlier roof structure plastered over:
collar, purlin and tie beam, altered floor levels. The passage leading through
to rear of house (and giving access to No 55A qv) has a cob outer wall and
a wall part on stone base.
All the listed buildings in the Close form an outstanding group.
