8/295 The Rectory
GV II
Rectory, 1842, stucco with ashlar dressings and low-pitched slate
roof, formerly overhanging at eaves on all sides, now cut back save
on north front. 2-storeys, 4-window range. Ashlar corniced end
wall stacks. Ashlar rusticated quoins, plinth, platband and window
dressings. Windows in long raised surrounds with brackets to sills
and plain stone frieze over. Ground floor windows have heavy
moulded cornices over friezes, projecting from platband. 6-pane
sashes. Large gabled ashlar porch with slate eaves roof, corner
piers with moulded imposts carrying moulded round arch with heavy
keystone. Smaller blank arches to sides and inner archway with 4-
panel door and fanlight. 2-gabled rear with recessed centre, left
gable now part of Charcoal House (q.v.), centre with C20 lean-to
replacing conservatory, right gable with rusticated quoins and fine
ashlar projecting centrepiece in the style of H. E. Goodridge.
Tripartite ground floor window, floor band and Venetian upper
loggia, unmoulded save for arch head and with pierced stone
balcony. 12-pane sash set back. Front garden has pierced stone
balustrading to right, 3 sections with panelled piers and
acroterial caps. 3 stone cornice piers, iron railings and gates to
front.
Interior: 2 east side rooms have Greek revival plasterwork to
ceilings and marble fireplaces.
