Former house and warehouse, now shop premises with store rooms
above. Early C17, C18 and C19. Timber-framed and rendered;
plaintiles.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with cellars and attics. 3 projecting
gables along the facade have a plastered coving, wooden
cornice and plain C19 bargeboards. A 2-light casement window
with diminished side-lights to each gable, and a range of 5
similar but larger C18 casement windows to the upper storey. A
fine early C19 shop front to the ground storey: the 6 windows,
divided by panelled pilasters, have rounded heads and
intersecting glazing bars in Gothick style. A wooden fascia
above with dentil cornice. A central C20 shop door and a
6-panelled door on the right with panelled reveals.
INTERIOR: the cellar is extensive and very high, the walls
entirely lined with coursed ashlar blocks, thought to be
re-used. In the east wall a narrow rectangular recess is
supported by a short section of small rounded stone column,
and on the wall above are the remains of a stone corbel. 2
stone blocks on the floor, set in line, have empty mortices,
probably for timber posts. The ground storey is without
original features; upper storey with boxed-in main beams.
Original rear wall removed, other walls covered in C19
vertical boarding. The attic storey appears to be a complete
early C18 addition: framing with long primary braces, bisected
studs; blocked window openings along rear wall, clasped purlin
roof with ridge.
