Partly in Bathford C.P., Avon.
Folly. 1848 by Mr. Wade Brown. Coursed rubble stone with shallow
hipped Welsh slate roof. Tapered square tower with offset top
stage. Square-headed doorway with C20 steel door on south side,
datestone inscribed W 1848 B/ C 1903 H, oculus below top stage on
north, east and south sides. Top stage has round-arched openings
with keystones and balustraded handrails, the balustrading missing
on north and west sides. Roof on deep bracketed eaves with
chamfered stone cornice below. Built as an eyecatcher, reputedly
to use agricultural labour during a slack time, commands fine views
over Bath and the Avon valley, Wade Brown lived at Monkton Farleigh
Manor House (q.v.) in 1840s.
